Adding Value to Your Home

There are so many ways to add value to your home, but one of the biggest ways is to finish out your attic or garage to add to your square footage.

The Attic

The attic is a blank space, and it would be useful to take advantage of the otherwise wasted area! The possibilities are endless… playroom, bedroom, game room, office. The list goes on! Take the space from a storage area to a useful, beautiful room.

With the attic, accessibility is a consideration. A spiral staircase is functional but also beautiful, or you could choose a loft ladder with slip-resistant treads and a recessed locking system. Railing around the attic entrance is a safety precaution that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Have fun with the room! Add colorful walls in a kids playroom, built-in shelving for all of your books, or a kitchenette to keep all your favorite snacks on hand for movie nights. Replacing or upgrading existing attic insulation to prevent heat from escaping in the winter and keep the attic cool in the summer. Insulation can keep energy bills down, as well as reduce noise levels from below.

The Garage

The garage is another space that can be turned into a more livable space. Some great options could be an art studio, a home gym, or the ultimate man cave. We’ve even seen some people turn their garages into small loft apartments and wine cellars! All it takes is a little imagination.

Many garages are attached to the home, which makes plumbing and electrical an easier job. If you’re worried about losing the garage space for your cars or storage, there is an option to build above the space in some homes. It tends to be a more budget-friendly home extension for many families.

Some basic upgrades can include adding windows, finishing floors, and installing a heating and cooling system. Then the fun part comes in: the room itself! Whatever you choose to turn the space into, you get to have free rein to add beautiful lighting, pool tables, unique furniture, or the latest gym equipment.

Of course, you’ll want to insulate the walls and ceiling, and the option to raise the floor a bit to insulate above the concrete floor slab. Just like with the attic, proper insulation is imperative to keeping bills low and the room comfortable.
