Shad and his team were great! They started and finished the job in the quoted time which was critical to allow the HVAC team to do their install. They did a great job removing all of the old insulation before installing the foam on the decking. It took 3 days to complete: 1 day for the demo and 2 days for the foam. I’m glad I went with them and their recommended HVAC team.

They worked me into their schedule due to my timeline and kept me informed about their arrival time the day of the job. The owner, the job lead, and the crew were all very nice and informative. Upon arrival, they checked the location, asked some clarifying questions, and got to work. They also had me check the insulation after they got started to make sure I was happy with the thickness. Overall a great experience! I would recommend First Defense Insulation for spray foam for any size project.

Erik KosobudMarch 21, 2026We have a 100-year-old pier-and-beam house close and we've been dealing with some pretty significant mold problems over the past year. Shad was incredibly helpful in answering questions, explaining the process, and detailing the costs. Those costs were higher than competitors but when we went to trusted companies for referrals, they always sent us back to First Defense! Shad's team also was up front about the moisture content in our home's framing and how being patient could lead to significant savings (50%+ of total cost) by waiting for dryer weather rather than trying to mechanically force the issue. They kept us in the rotation for more than two months as we waited for the right conditions. They even did one section at the very beginning and held off to complete the job until the moisture content tested correctly. HUGE savings for us because they were willing to be patient. The First Defense team was also incredibly organized, our home and yard were meticulously clean after each visit. William, as our lead and project manager, did a great job communicating with us on what what going to happen, how it was unfolding, and what we ended up with. Truly top notch!

Lake LifeMarch 18, 2026My insulation project was challenging - I needed to insulate a vaulted residential roof during a full roof replacement. Finding the right solution was difficult because I received conflicting solutions and recommendations from several insulation contractors (and even AI tools): radiant barrier or no radiant barrier, air gaps, blown-in vs. batt insulation, etc. After a couple of missteps — including a very bad experience with a contractor recommended through Angi — I eventually found First Defense Insulation. From our first meeting, Shadrick Wall (Co-Founder and COO) impressed me with his knowledge and professionalism. He carefully evaluated the roof and clearly explained what I should do — and just as importantly, what I should not do — and why. His attention to detail and willingness to explain the technical reasoning gave me confidence that I was finally getting the right advice and the right solution. The project required close coordination with my roofing company and the weather wasn’t cooperative. Shadrick stayed on top of everything, monitoring conditions and communicating with me ahead of installation so that timing worked for both crews. On installation day, which was windy and cold, the team arrived early and ready to begin as soon as the old roof was removed. We encountered an unexpected issue of finding hidden loose cellulose insulation that had to be removed. Shadrick quickly rerouted a vacuum truck to the house and the crew thoroughly removed the old material. They then adjusted the plan again and added additional insulation to fully fill the deeper-than-expected cavities. I really appreciated their willingness to adapt to unexpected and unplanned conditions. The entire project was professionally designed, carefully coordinated, and expertly executed. When all was said and done, I was a very happy customer knowing that expert work had been done and that corners were not cut. Many thanks to Shadrick and the entire First Defense team — I highly recommend them.+1

It is amazing how many local companies, who can get my business don't even return my phone calls! John from FDI answered promptly, called me multiple times, and walked me through the exact questions that I should bring to my contractor. I had many questions; And John answered them all. Refreshing that I found someone that loves what he does and is very passionate about it. I could not find that locally. I sent John pictures of the project area for his review...his idea! Matt PerskyNovember 13, 2025Shad and his team were excellent. I can’t recommend them enough for your insulation needs. I needed the fiberglass insulation under my house removed and spray foam insulation installed. I called and got several quotes from various companies. First Defense wasn’t the cheapest, but they were upfront and honest with me from the beginning. You WILL get your money’s worth by going with this company. All my questions were answered and I was given several options to choose from. The installation process was quick and everything was clean afterwards. My wife and I are happy to no longer have cold floors or wet insulation under our house.

Zachary DibbernSeptember 6, 2025First Defense Insulation did an awesome job spray foaming my house. The difference it has already made (unfinished house at the moment) in the heat coming through the roof and sound through the walls is incredible! I worked with Shadrick on going through the process, and they were quite patient with my constantly changing schedule. Additionally, if you have old insulation, they will come and vacuum it out. All who came to work on the project were quite friendly, efficient, and thorough on the getting the walls spray foamed. There is an odor after, but it goes away in a couple days with good airflow. All-in-all, if I need to spray foam again, I will be using them, and would recommend the same to everyone else!

Melissa FarrisJune 20, 2025We were referred to Shad with First Defense by two people we highly trust. We were just about to hire another company when we were told about the work Shad’s team does. Our trusted HVAC professional told us that all the blower door tests that he does after First Defense has air sealed a home always shows great improvement, and with the other guys, he doesn’t find much difference, unfortunately. We lost a home, all our belongings and our health to mold, 2 years ago, and since then I’ve learned how important it is to seal your top plates. First Defense was quite higher in price BUT their scope of work was much more detailed! Their product was higher quality than the other company we were considering. Shad’s team even uncovered a huge part of our house that was missing insulation, that our builder attempted to hide, by covering the space- we had no clue! Shad has gone above and beyond, from the beginning, to take care of us and to ease my mind. I have a lot of anxiety after what we’ve experienced and this entire building back our lives, after mold, has been so expensive. I just didn’t want to throw money away anymore. Shad has been to our home since the work was complete to take a look at a few things I’ve been concerned with, to confidently show me that things are ok. My humidity is ok. Our indoor air is safe. He has even offered to be here when our HVAC guy does the blower door test, to see how well our home is sealed now. Shad has promised to stick with us for forever, basically. From here on out he’s a part of our team, of keeping our home safe and maintained. He’s easy to talk to, my husband and him crack jokes and have a great time when he’s here. Shad, I know this is your job, you meet people every single day, I hope you know that we appreciate you. This is more than a job to us, what you are doing is keeping people safe, keeping their homes safe. That’s what this means to me and you’ve been so kind and patient with my calls, texts, and the visits you’ve made out here to help assure me. Thank you for being one of the good ones!! Funny, just as I am finishing this up Shad is texting me to check in on our thermostat reading. That’s Shad! After 9pm!! (I have some photos to upload but this app keeps messing up. I’ll add them later from my laptop.)

I had a tree fall on the house causing a huge hole in the roof allowing rain and debris to come into the home. John had someone come out and tarp the roof to prevent further damage and immediately got to work on the repairs. He didn’t cut any corners and made sure the replacement parts were matched to the existing parts such as paint, soffits, trimmings, etc. He was out there making sure everything was done to his liking and if there was anything off and he didn’t like, it was done again until it was done right. Truly the best experience I had knowing that I didn’t have to be present to make sure it was done correctly. John is a man of integrity and someone who will treat your home as if it was his own. You will not regret calling First Defense for your roofing or insulation needs!!

John responded to my inquiry very quickly and even came out for a quote during the weekend. When it came time to do the job, the crew showed up on time, and with a supervisor who helped ensure that the job went smooth from start to finish. The supervisor texted me photos, videos, and progress updates throughout the day, which provided great peace of mind. Definitely would recommend to a friend. You might be able to find a cheaper quote somewhere else, but you won't be getting the same quality of work, communication, customer service, and punctuality. Save yourself the headache and hire these guys.

John came for the initial inspection/quote and answered ALL of the questions I had (which were many!) -- he was able to fully describe and help me understand the process of Crawl Space Encapsulation. He even answered a few follow-up questions I had after meeting with other companies and doing my own research. He really knows his stuff and is an expert! Out of all 3 companies I received quotes from, John was the most honest, knowledgable, and had the best price. Today was installation day and the guys showed up on-time and were incredibly kind. When it was time for them to leave, they locked our driveway gate and moved everything back to the way it was. It was cleaned up like they weren't even there. The payment process was also extremely straightforward. If you are looking for high-quality work, a communicative and knowledge company, punctuality, and kind service -- First Defense Insulation is the way to go!

I interviewed a couple of companies before deciding to go with First Defense Insulation LLC. Patrick SmithMarch 8, 2023Experience was great overall with getting insulation in our crawl space. John came out and was able to look at the property, come up with a plan, and sent over the estimate in a timely manner. Wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but he went through in detail of what was needed in the area and recommendations. Once the estimate was approved, we got on the schedule. The day of installation, I got notification that they were coming out and the team was out early and worked quickly on getting ready. Installation of the insulation went well and the team cleaned the area and then cleaned up on their way out. I would use them again if the need arises. Highly recommend.

Michael WoodardMarch 4, 2023First Defence replaced the roof on my house and detached garage. They stripped the old roofing down to the wood decking. They inspected my wood decking for damage and deterioration. Then installed state of the art materials ( not felt paper). John left nothing to chance as he was there to inspect every detail. Daniel HarringtonJanuary 26, 2023I contacted multiple service providers in Houston, to request quotes and assessment for spray foam insulation in the crawlspace area of our pier-and-beam home. John Harper at First Defense was the only one to give a thorough assessment of both the crawlspace area, and the rest of the home, viewing the attic, roof, doors, windows, etc. I never experienced an over-sell at all, but just a thorough assessment, and proposal for the best solution. He identified that First Defense's proposal would not necessarily be the lowest bid (true), but I definitely felt the most assured from his proposal. Other groups either retracted their bid (unwilling to enter the crawlspace area), or generated a bid without even seeing the home. In my experience over a couple of weeks' worth of winter temperatures, there is definitely a noticeable improvement in the floor-level temperatures on our ground floor. I've already recommended FD to neighbors and friends – their service was prompt, communication was clear, and the product has seemed to make an impact as desired.

Our custom built 1970’s house was going to bee a challenge because of it’s flat roof. Our project was no challenge for this team. My husband I I were presented with a plan, offered financing, and scheduled our project to be completed in two days. Our family of five and three dogs were given housing for the two days at no additional cost! After the project was complete we came home to a perfectly clean home. We were impressed with the entire process. When I woke up the next morning I could not believe how crisp and clean the air felt. I thought I was imagining it until I asked my husband and teenagers. They also said they slept great and woke up refreshed. I was shocked. I do not only highly recommend this company but insist.

Tina StrongAugust 3, 2022Finally a contractor I can trust! I messaged John about issues with other my primary bedroom being warmer than the rest of the house. Luckily he was in the area and came over within hours. While reviewing my cooling issues we talked about my fireplaces. I mentioned I was having issues with my bedroom one and was quoted $10k to repair. After looking at it for a few minutes he diagnosed the problem as my gas logs being oversized. He removed the larger logs and we lit the fireplace. No exhaust fumes! None. Saved me $10k!! The other contractor “misdiagnosed” my issue and was prepared to charge me $10k. How convenient. We’ve all been taken my shady contractors. John is a guy you can trust!!

NoahOctober 14, 2021If you are looking to convert your home from a traditional insulation attic to a conditioned attic like I was… look no further. It started with the utmost professionalism and friendliness from one of the owners Shad, and continued all the way through the process with his team until the very end. You won’t find a more knowledgeable contractor when it comes to spray foam insulation. There is a lot more that goes into this process than just spraying the foam… and First Defense Insulation considers and informs you of all of them. The icing on the cake is how good of a job they do. You won’t have to worry if the job was done as good as it should, it will be done perfect. I crawled around every inch of my attic and couldn’t find one thing to not be fully satisfied about. I could not recommend this company more highly, and have already to my coworkers.

Shawn SmithSeptember 30, 2021John and his crew were very efficient and professional! John was very thorough in explaining the insulation process and payment plans so that I knew what to expect. I have 4 people who work from home and we were thinking we would have to go into the office, but we were all able to stay at home during this process. There was noise but nothing that was extreme and once they finished over our office we could barely hear them. The crew was just amazing and so quick and efficient the first day was vacuuming and was the longest of course and then the other two days they were here at 8 and done before noon. They were always on time and didn't waste a second. The second day the foam insulation is sprayed and there is a paint smell, but they did their best to contain it by putting plastic around the attic entrance, also we opened the windows and shut the doors of the rooms we were in and smelled nothing. Overall this was the best experience I have had with anyone who has worked on my house and I can't wait to see the benefits on my electricity bill because we could already feel the difference after the foam was sprayed. Already our A/C does not have to come on as much. I highly recommend First Defense Installation.+3

Dan E.August 24, 2021Had open cell foam sprayed into our MASSIVE attic. Very expensive but it completely transformed the attic. It used to be extremely hot and felt dirty and dusty. Feels like part of the house now and is much cleaner (they remove the old "blown in" insulation as part of the job). We're looking forward to seeing our first electricity bill with the new insulation. Communication was fantastic throughout; before, during and after the job. They addressed our concerns, thoroughly explained the process and what to expect, and kept us informed of progress while the job was being done. When the job was done the house was left spotless. Prior to this we did not realize the importance of starting with the attic and to be sure it is up to the standard in order the the AC to work to the best of its ability. We haven’t had the work done yet and will review again but making me this huge financial decision and feeling comfortable already is a huge relief. Look for another review after the work is complete. Senai AdaghishApril 13, 2020I have contacted First Defence Insulation after I found them in google. And John was able to make an inspection appointment the very next day. Even though the supposed personal couldn't make it to the appointment, John drove all the way from Houston to Dallas to fulfill his word and make it happen, instead of canceling on me. I appreciatte his respect for Customers and his level of knowledge when it comes to how the airconditioning and heating systems work in making the home comfortable while saving energy costs. During the inspection he crawled in to very tight attics and checked everything that needs sealing. Also he brought different demonstration materials to demo for me how insulation works in the attics. And stayed almost 6 hours just for a free inspection. Unfortunately I had a change of plan and haven't continued his the project. But as far as I can tell from the inspection John is really communicative and professional. And I recommend him and his company for insulation projects and making your home comfortable.
